Five films for different moods

Films? Films?!?! I know, I know – we all love to haul ourselves into our duvets and binge watch series after series on our laptops through Netflix these days. It means we don’t have to leave the confines of our warm, cosy, perfectly moulded nest; it means that we don’t have to get up and change any pesky discs in the DVD player. Zero movement required. Perfecto.

Whilst I love the slob-life – and I really, really do – I often find myself yearning to watch a good old fashioned film on the sofa. I always tell myself that I don’t have time to watch a film through, but fail to remind myself of this when I’m 4 hours deep into Orange Is The New Black. Ahem.

If I’m being honest, it doesn’t feel right to me to watch a film on my laptop, I’m much happier getting stuck into a film when I’m laid on the sofa watching it on the TV. Maybe a swish Panasonic smart TV if Santa is reading this…

But if you’re anything like me, I’ve got to be in the right mood to watch a certain type of film. So with that in mind, I’ve devised a list of 5 films suitable for your varying moods, which might hopefully provide you with filmspiration for the coming weekend. Go on, ditch your laptop for one night and get stuck into your DVD collection.

  1. “I want to snuggle and maybe have a big cry but also laugh a bit”

Remember The Titans

Uh huh. This film is perfect for reminding us how far society has come, and how we must never let the cruelty of the past surface again. It will make you cry, and laugh, and also appreciate the timeless beauty of ‘pre-fame’ Ryan Gosling. It centres around high school football, and the integration of a white and black school in the 1970s. Utterly brilliant.

  1. “People are rubbish. Make me believe in mankind again”.

Leon

I know I feel like this at least once per week, and while this film is ultimately about a man who kills people for money, it will remind you that people CAN be good, and can do the right thing. Even if they do shoot quite a lot of people…

It also has a young Natalie Portman, whose style in this film is just. so. good.

  1. “I love Michael Cera”.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Okay, so I’m not sure if this qualifies as a mood or just a permanent state of mind, but it’s here for you anyway. If you’ve not seen this yet, GET IT ON YOUR SCREEN. I’ll even lend you my copy. Lol jk, ain’t nobody trusted with my Michael Cera DVDs. Anyway, think 500 Days of Summer, but less vommy. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a bit of 500DOS, but this is a bit less in your face, and has less of the ‘Manic Pixie Dreamgirl’ trope. And more Michael Cera. Being beautiful.

  1. “Take me back to simpler times”

Pretty Woman

Pretty Woman was made 25 years ago – that’s longer than some of you reading this will have been alive. Crazy. Anyway, if you’re anything like me, you have watched this film over and over and over again and you know all the words – and not just the infamous line from the designer store scene. I’ve read criticism of this film, regarding it sexist – but I have never seen it that way. Vivian Ward is one of my favourite female film characters – she’s strong, funny, and independent. And completely sassy.

  1. “I am feeling all the emotions all at once”

All the Harry Potters

All of the Harry Potter films offer you something different.  Obvs, if you’ve seen the films before, you’ll know that they get progressively darker and more intricate in terms of the storyline. My personal favourite is Half Blood Prince; in this film we learn so much about different characters, and our minds are changed about the people we thought we knew oh-so-well.  It will leave you with a mélange of emotions – in a good way.

What are you gonna watch this weekend?!

  1. I couldn’t agree with you more about preferring to watch movies on the TV as opposed to a little laptop screen! I’ve definitely got some movies to check out now, might have a night of it! Love your new layout too, very clean and professional x
